Our top 6 tips to finding the perfect pub in the Lake District

06 Jun 2017

The perfect Pub is a very difficult thing to find. In the Lake District we are blessed with Pubs in outstanding beauty spots, Pubs with fantastic ales and food and Pubs that have years of history. Below are our tips to finding the perfect Pub.

Tradition

With pubs dating back to 1189Ad, it is fair to say that Pubs are in our blood and are an English tradition. In our opinion there is no better feeling of walking into a Lake District pub that has been open for hundreds of years. With a nice cold pint, you can imagine the conversations that are held in the ancient walls. You can feel the history oozing from the place as you relax by a fire that has been burning for centuries.

Well our beautiful Plough Inn nestling on the border between North Yorkshire and the southern Lakes, just a few miles from Windermere, has tradition in spades. Our 18th century public house is full of charm and character. With a pleasing mix of smooth slate, pale rugs, equestrian art and scrubbed wood. You will feel like you can hear the echoes of the past. Walk towards the windows and you will see views of Farleton Knott, an ancient local landmark that was once a beacon hill used to send warning of 'Scottish irruptions'. Above all else, when we think of Pub tradition, we think of hospitality and at the Plough Inn we like a bit of old school hospitality.

Drink

After a long walk rambling through the fells, there is no better feeling of relaxing in a Pub with a nice drink (preferably an alcoholic one). If you don’t believe me...... Well a new study from Oxford University has found that drinking in moderation with friends seems to improve overall wellbeing.  So now when you have that pint you can feel good about it.

I like a pub with a nice variety of local Ales but with an abundance of Wines from all corners of the world. Fresh Coffee and Tea steaming away in the morning and enough Fruit Juice for the kids to keep them occupied. Well at the Plough Inn we have all this and more and we pride ourselves on our well looked after beer.

Food

Pub food brings people together; there is a great feeling of pleasure when you are sat around a table with family and friends tucking into beautiful wholesome grub. With restaurants on every street corner these days, your traditional meat and veg slopped on a plate doesn’t cut it for Pub food anymore. People expect something special, food with finesse and a menu full of variety.

At the Plough Inn we are a food led pub, we know that our reputation is built on great eats. Our focus is to provide you with a memorable meal as it is hugely important to us that we provide top quality food. Our menu provides you with a fountain of choice from a Rajasthan Curry to a 16oz Chateaubriand.

According to our customers we are accomplishing our goal of supplying outstanding food:-

“Excellent, outstanding food, service second to none. Best mash potato I've ever tasted. Can't fault at all”

“I had fish and chips and it was excellent. Large chunky home cooked chips and an excellent battered cod. Washed down with a pint of Cumbrian ale, perfect way to start a weekend walking in the Lakes. Well worth stopping off for.”

Accommodation

You have had a great walk, a lovely drink or three, a beautiful meal and all you want to do is hit the hay. I have found after many holidays in the Lake District that accommodation can be hit or miss. I have been in rooms that look like they haven’t been redecorated since the 1960’s but I have also stayed in places that are just beautiful. For a Pub it is vital that you provide accommodation which makes people feel at home but also extremely special.

At the Plough Inn, we can honestly say that we have succeeded in providing rooms that are simply luxurious. With our rooms starting at just £85 there really is no need to leave the building! We have ensured that each room provides space, style, but above all, comfort. It is our utmost priority to make our guests feel welcome at The Plough and we have tried to give each of our rooms a touch of opulence and charm in order for our guests to feel at home-from-home.

Service

Any great Pub is about more than the food and drink – it has to have great front-of-house too. A Pub is the hub of the community and in that sense everyone who enters into a Public House should feel comfortable and part of the community. A smile and manners makes a customer’s experience go from ‘alright’ to ‘fantastic’ in an instant.

Great service should be at the heart of every Pub’s ethos and we can safely say that service is the soul of the Plough Inn. Our customers can vouch for this:-

“Delicious food, great staff, great atmosphere and good service. All round excellent evening. The staff were polite and speedy - thank you.”

“My husband and I regularly eat here, the atmosphere is great, food is delicious, service good. What more could you ask for!”

“Fabulous service as usual. We booked late after a poor service elsewhere and when we arrived found our drinks ready at our table.”
